What's Sprituality Got to Do With It?

In most workplaces, discussions around "spirituality" are considered taboo. But research is showing that, in healthcare, there is good reason to discuss spirituality when it comes to patient care. Properly utilized, spiritual care techniques can improve health outcomes. This video, and its accompanying workshop materials, develop skills for assessing and addressing a patient's health-related spiritual issues.

Benefits:
  • Illustrates how a patient's spiritual beliefs can impact their ability to cope with stress
  • Presents research linking spiritual care with improved health outcomes
  • Teaches how to assess a patient's need for spiritual care and align it with clinical treatment

What's Spirituality Got to Do With It?

Run time: 16 Minutes

We recommend you look at the Sample Training Guide before watching the full-length preview online.

The What's Spirituality Got To Do With It? video models interactions that employ the findings of current research on the link between spirituality and health. A dramatic vignette illustrates how medical staff -- at odds about whether or not spirituality should be factored into a patient's medical evaluation -- are introduced to research on the connection between spirituality, patient coping skills and improved health outcomes. Two residents then watch as their physician-mentor resolves a patient's acute stress symptoms by assessing and treating both her spiritual and physical needs.

Accompanying workshop exercises provide opportunities for staff to practice working with tools such as: how to start "spiritual conversations", assessing the need for spiritual care (through a screening history) and empathic prayer. The Participant Workbook contains 13 pages of supplemental research and resources on the spirituality/health connection and how to align spiritual care with clinical treatment.

The instruction in this program can be applied to all types of spirituality conversations including:
  • Sharing feelings such as anger, hope, fear or sorrow.
  • Talking about the meaning of life and/or the experience of dying.
  • Praying, meditating or reading inspirational writings.
  • Discussing religious beliefs and concerns.
  • Exploring feelings about pain and suffering.
  • Seeking forgiveness or discussing reconciliation of relationships.
  • Supporting difficult decisions.
  • Encouragement, giving of thanks and celebration.
