Workplace Violence

The Calm Before the Storm

In one year alone, workplace homicides accounted for one out of five of work-related deaths. As shocking as every incident is, the precursors to workplace violence can be things that are very common in today's world-- an employee disgruntled over a bad performance review, a former employee who feels wrongly terminated, or an individual at odds with a boss or co-worker. Awareness of workplace violence is the key to defending against it. Make sure all employees know the warning signs and understand the proper protocol for reporting and handling these situations.

  • Increases every employee's level of violence awareness
  • Shows the types of violence that can occur and actions to take
  • Provides the organization with a plan for crisis management

Workplace Violence: The Calm Before the Storm

Run time: 25 Minutes

Conditions such as widespread job layoffs, insensitive terminations and pressure for increased productivity can lead to employee frustration, which can cause stress and conflicts in the workplace. The best way to identify someone’s potential for violence is to recognize warning signs and be alert to potentially violent behavior (such as verbal threats or a history of violence).

Featuring author/expert Joseph A. Kinney and an interview with an actual victim, Workplace Violence: The Calm Before the Storm is designed to inform employees about the various types of workplace violence that exist today. While it is the organization's responsibility to combat this growing threat to production, property and people, organizations can only help prevent an incident by making all of their employees aware and prepared for any signs and signals of impending violence.

How each employee handles a situation is where training and organizational policy and procedures meet. The three reasons why employers should have a violence prevention program are because they have a legal responsibility to respond to threats, to ward off the threat of lawsuits, and because it’s good business. The program outlines how to implement a violence prevention program and how to deal with actual incidents of violence.

When participants complete this training they should:
  • Understand what is meant by the threat of workplace violence.
  • State the warning signs of potential violent behavior.
  • Understand the importance of creating a violence prevention program.
  • State ways of dealing with both stress and conflicts at work.
  • Know how to report a threat to management.
  • Know how to switch gears when threat management becomes crisis management.
