Flash Point on Campus

Recognizing & Preventing Violence

Each year, thousands of students and staff become victims of violence on high school and college campuses. While campus shootings are rare, assaults, intimate partner violence, and stalking are not uncommon. Violence, however, is almost always evolutionary with warning signs along the way. Making an effort to prevent school violence is a win-win proposition for the administration and its students.

Benefits:
  • Develops a mindset of awareness for warning signs in an individual's behavior
  • Prepares staff and students for what the school never expects to happen
  • Creates an environment where everyone is a stakeholder in the safety and security of the campus

Flash Point on Campus: Recognizing & Preventing Violence

Run time: 21 Minutes

To prevent violence on campus, administrators, staff and students alike need to be able to recognize warning signs and understand how to respond to them. Preparation and awareness means knowing what is meant by "campus violence", recognizing common myths and more importantly, learning to recognize Behaviors of Concern before violence occurs.

The FBI’s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime reported that threats, harassment, bullying, stalking, and other forms of behavior -- if left unchecked -- can result in more serious and potentially lethal behavior. It is essential for everyone on campus to remain alert to problematic behavior that, in combination, could point to possible violence.

This instructional DVD training system provides tools to deal with threats or threatening behavior, which may be the single most important key to preventing violence. You may never know if you've actually succeeded in preventing a violent incident, but if you can help create a more positive and respectful school environment, you may in fact, be contributing to its safety.

The focus of this program is to help students and staff:
  • Understand what is meant by Campus Violence
  • Recognize common myths about Campus Violence
  • Recognize Behaviors of Concern before violence occurs
  • Recognize signs of stalking and intimate partner violence
  • Understand the importance of early action and options for responding to and reporting warning signs
