Cultural Competency: Just Good Healthcare

Run time: 15 Minutes

Healthcare providers who are sensitive to the cultural and religious beliefs of the communities they serve -- particularly surrounding health and illness -- provide patient-centered care. It's considered cultural competency and it is a regulation in hospitals around the country.

Cultural Competency: Just Good Healthcare informs healthcare workers about the basics of cultural competency. The program focuses on the importance of respecting a patient's cultural and religious preferences. It covers how to avoid cross-cultural conflicts, stereotyping, and personal biases that can interfere with quality care. Also included is a simple cultural assessment to help caregivers learn about patients' cultural and religious preferences, and how to include them in the patient care plan.

Learning Objectives:
  • Define Cultural Competency
    - How do we give all patients the quality care they deserve?
    - Awareness: How do cross-cultural conflicts happen?
    - Self-awareness: How do we avoid stereotyping?
    - Gathering information: How do we conduct a culture assessment?
  • Define a Culturally Competent Caregiver
    - Evaluates how others want to be treated.
    - Remains respectful of others' cultures.
    - Listens carefully, staying receptive to important clues.
    - Evaluates the facts and takes precautions.

Overall the program is designed to address the delicate nature of cultural competence. Patient assessment tools are introduced that allow healthcare professionals to explain illnesses and treatment, identify healing, negotiate treatment, intervene and collaborate with patient family members. Additional content and insights are given to enhance the comprehension and retention of this critical information.
