Consciously Overcoming Unconscious Bias

This easy-to-use program provides an excellent overview of unconscious bias and micro-inequities and how to address them in the workplace. First, it explains where unconscious bias comes from and helps viewers recognize such biases in themselves. The video then depicts how unconscious bias is expressed through subtle but harmful behaviors known as micro-inequities. Lastly, coverage is given to day-to-day behaviors that convey respect rather than bias.
In covering these three topics the following definitions are provided:
- Unconscious bias is a prejudice we have or an assumption that we make about another person based on common cultural stereotypes, rather than on a thoughtful judgment.
- Micro-inequities are subtle, disrespectful actions that reflect our biases. They can be difficult to recognize for both the person acting them out and the target.
- Micro-affirmations are small, everyday gestures of respect that make the recipient feel included and valued. Micro-affirmations are the antidote for micro-inequities.
Unconscious bias and micro-inequities are problematic for individuals who strive to be open-minded and respectful of others. They negatively impact the workplace by affecting productivity, morale and employee health (both physical and emotional). The advantage of this training program is that it introduces a positive solution to the problem: micro-affirmations.
